Private Residence - North London

Heritage Portland Stone bricks, supplied by Albion Stone, play a central role in this carefully considered residential extension and refurbishment designed by Natalie Black of Enbee Architecture and Design and delivered by Oasis Energy Efficient Buildings. The scheme combines a single storey extension to the rear with a two storey addition to the front, unified through the consistent use of natural stone.

In line with Enbee’s approach of using natural, low carbon materials to create high performance homes, the stone bricks contribute both to the architectural expression and to the environmental strategy of the project.

At the rear, the material is used to articulate the relationship between inside and out. Corbelled brick jambs are carefully detailed to create a layered, cascading frame to the glazing, bringing depth, shadow and texture to the façade. This same language extends into the garden, where substantial planters constructed from Heritage Portland Stone bricks flank the steps, reinforcing the connection between building and landscape and supporting a cohesive external environment. Around 5000 bricks were used across the project, including a number of bespoke specials supplied through CED.

The front elevation adopts a more solid and grounded expression. Here, specially cut stone bricks introduce a sense of weight and permanence, helping the extension sit comfortably within its suburban setting. The subtle tonal consistency of Portland stone enhances daylight while maintaining a calm, refined appearance that complements the existing context.

Throughout the project, the use of Heritage Portland Stone bricks demonstrates how natural materials can support both design ambition and performance goals. Reflecting Enbee’s focus on improving comfort, reducing energy use, and creating homes that are built for the future, the masonry moves beyond a purely aesthetic role to become an integral part of a low carbon, durable and carefully crafted solution.
