Studio Folk has completed a 7sqm sandstone brick extension to a Grade II‑listed Georgian terrace in Mile End, London, using Darney Heritage Stone Bricks supplied by Hutton Stone. Working in collaboration with Charlotte Moore Studio, the practice adapted the lower ground floor to create a more generous layout and significantly improve the home’s connection to the garden.

Studio Folk calculated that choosing natural stone over clay brick reduced embodied carbon emissions by at least 75%, demonstrating the material’s strong environmental advantage. The construction process was largely comparable to traditional clay brickwork, though the team noted that natural stone required slightly more care during storage and handling to prevent chipping and moisture absorption.

The project illustrates how stone brickwork can be successfully applied to small‑scale domestic schemes, offering longevity, character and the potential for future craftsmanship. Elements of the extension were designed to allow in‑situ carving in later phases, extending the building’s life cycle and enabling decorative work to evolve over time.

Following the success of this project, Studio Folk has confirmed that it now specifies stone brickwork as its standard material, recognising its environmental performance, versatility and aesthetic value
